Ultra-fast 256-slice gantry for Brilliance iCT scanner

At the RSNA 2007 Philips Electronics unveiled its 256-slice Brilliance iCT scanner that will allow radiologists to create high-quality images with excellent acquisition speed. It is powerful enough to capture an image of the entire heart in just two beats while significantly reducing the radiation doses.

Capture an image of the entire heart in just two beats

 

Working in close cooperation, Philips Applied Technologies developed and manufactured the complete CT gantry design within six months to allow Philips to test and address the high-risk areas in the early phase of development. This fast development will enable reduced time-to-market for the company’s Brilliance line of iCT scanners with significant potential for increased profits.

The challenge in development

Several years ago, Philips Medical Systems’ CT Engineering Department in Cleveland demonstrated a new gantry solution that included an innovative bearing design. CT Engineering subsequently elicited the support of Philips Applied Technologies to help translate this solution into a new gantry design for its Brilliance line of CT scanners. The challenge was to develop and manufacture a complete design within six months. The functional model created by Philips Applied Technologies took just three months to design and three months to manufacture using a local manufacturer in the Netherlands. This functional model is currently used for continuous life testing at Philips Applied Technologies, Eindhoven. Two other functional models have since been produced and are undergoing specialized testing procedures in Philips Cleveland and Philips Hamburg.
