Philips Applied Technologies’ innovative Aptura light source packaging wins WorldStar award

December 2006

Philips Applied Technologies has won an illustrious WorldStar award presented by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). The packaging concept for Aptura light sources was recognized as advanced and innovative by the largest and most important affiliation of packaging professionals in the world today. Last October Philips Applied Technologies won a bronze “Gouden Noot 2006” award for this concept granted by the Dutch Packaging Organization.

WorldStar 2006 attracted 265 entries from 35 countries around the world. Out of this 130 were selected as WorldStar winners 2006 by the jury in their meeting in Poznan, Poland. The jury consisted of 23 representatives from the World Packaging Organisation and one representative from the International Packaging Press Organisation (IPPO).

Walter Verbokkem, Philips Applied Technologies Packaging Development, states: “By using an integral approach and by combining packaging characteristics we were able to realize an innovating unique plastic packaging concept that can be applied on all types of light sources for backlighting, 32, 37, and 42 inch. With a minimum of material the concept gives maximum protection. Next to this the design is very user-focused and can be opened easily. Besides, the packaging design allows optimal efficiency for the logistics process.”

The backlight Fluorescent tubes are extremely vulnerable and expensive. They are used in flat panel TV’s. Especially challenging was the specification that the tubes are not to be touched on the outside as the coating materials are used there.
