Philips Applied Technologies’ wireless body monitoring system plays key role in PSV Field Lab

8 May, 2006

Eindhoven, the Netherlands – In order to remain their top position in the national and international competition football club PSV is working together with technology providers to develop new tools for coaches. A new innovative concept will be revealed on 10 May 2006: Field Lab. This innovative system provides a real-time, remote-controlled assessment of the performance of both team and individual players during training. Philips Applied Technologies’ advanced remote heart monitoring technology plays a key role in Field Lab.

Field Lab is a joint project of PSV, TNO, Philips, the Vrije Universiteit, the University of Groningen and other technology companies. In order to be able to measure heart activity real-time and remote, TNO has engaged the help of Philips Applied Technologies whose technology enables the heart rates of footballers to be measured remotely during training across a football field. The upshot is better information on strain during particular training sessions.

Philips Applied Technologies in cooperation with Philips Research, Aachen, has developed a prototype of a wearable, wireless monitoring system that measures and analyses the wearer’s body signals enabling detection of health conditions.

Through intelligent sensors the monitoring system can process and store data about the physical condition of the soccer players. These sensors communicate through wireless links with equipment outside of the football field. By combining the body monitoring technology with a positioning system for football the complete system can deliver coaches, trainers, and medical staff valuable tactical and physical information on which they can base strategic decisions. The complete system contributes to better training supervision and to match preparation.
