Philips Applied Technologies supports regional innovation with
sponsorship of first international robotics festival in the Netherlands
7-9 April, 2006
Eindhoven, The Netherlands
- By supporting the first European robotics
festival 'RoboLudens' Philips Applied Technologies intends to
boost technological innovation in the development of robotic
applications in the Technology Triangle Eindhoven, Aachen, and
Leuven. Furthermore, the organization wants to bridge the gap
between human interaction and technology. The Philips Applied
Technologies RoboCup Team is one of the main initiators of this
major event that takes place from 7 April until 9 April in the
Beursgebouw Eindhoven.
"Robots" have often been taken as central theme in movies/
films. Mostly in a fear-raising role when getting out of control
or used as weapon by the bad guys to get control over the good
guys. The first use of robots in a film dates back to 1920's.
The use of robots to become more productive and to make our
lives easier is still a challenging matter where imagination,
end-user insight and leading technology need to go hand in hand
in order to set steps ahead.
The past century we have seen robotic applications optimizing
industrial processes. Philips Applied Technologies strongly
believes that there will be a healthy business growth opportunity
for robotics in Philips related products. That is why Philips
Applied Technologies has been investing in domestic and autonomous
robotics since the late nineties.
To discover possibilities of artificial intelligence in combination
with mechanics Philips Applied Technologies has decided to participate
in the RoboCup league and has set up a RoboCup Team. The team
consists of engineers and technologists that together develop
and "coach" a team of autonomous soccer playing robots. By bringing
together experts on audio, video, software, vision and mechatronics
Philips Applied Technologies created a learning environment
in which unknown territory in robotics can be discovered.
The realization of robotic appliances is a challenge that demands
a synthesis of functionalities – including the capacity for
verbal dialogue, facial recognition and motion detection. With
the powerful portfolio of competences Philips Applied Technologies
has, the organization is able to develop advanced integral robotic
solutions. Not only for RoboCup football, but as spin off, also
for other functionalities in Healthcare and Lifestyle.
By supporting the RoboLudens festival Philips Applied Technologies
hopes to stimulate awareness and knowledge sharing on Robotics
for human use, in the region and international. This will also
support Philips to create simple, intuitive, meaningful and
more enjoyable interaction with modern technology in general.
The development of robots to which people can comfortably relate
is a next step in making people's lives easier and so improve
the quality of their being.
