Deploying new sound technologies in
consumer products
Philips Peripherals & Accessories,
a Hong Kong based category mobility of Philips Consumer
Lifestyle, has a long time close relationship with Philips
Applied Technologies who provides it with valuable support
in transferring innovative new sound technologies into
commercially viable consumer products. A recent success
story was the implementation of Active Noise Reduction
technology in a stereo headphone set that offers a quality
matching that of the best of the competition at a fraction
of the price.
|
| Philips Peripherals & Accessories
initially subcontracted the headphone development to
a third-party supplier but the results were unsatisfactory.
The BU approached Philips Applied Technologies to support
it in realizing its ambition of developing Active Noise
Reduction headphones at a price that would be competitive
in the consumer market. The technology, already used
in several competitor headphones, cancels unwanted noise
from the environment by generating a sound signal exactly
180° out of phase with the noise. Philips Applied Technologies
came up with the initial design, which proved highly
successful within 6 months and has since assisted Philips
Peripherals & Accessories in adding refinements. These
include improvements in styling by integrating the electronics
and microphones that detect the ambient noise within
the headphone ear shells and further performance improvements.
The Philips headphones SHN9500, entered the market in
April 2006 and offer a performance easily matching that
of the best competitor headphones at only around 50%
of the price. As a result of this success story, Philips
Applied Technologies is currently supporting Philips
Peripherals & Accessories in development its new product
roadmap which includes a range of selective noise reduction
headphones (suppressing ambient noise but not the human
voice) and Active Noise Reduction earphones. |
