Near-Field communication supports
easy WiFi setting up
Low-cost and high-bandwidth
connectivity are the main perceived benefits of
Wi-Fi. But setting up and configuring Wi-Fi products
to communicate with each other can be a challenge,
sometimes leading to disappointment and complaints
to manufacturers. Philips Applied Technologies is
currently developing and promoting a novel technique
for configuring Wi-Fi products based on near field
communication (NFC).

Products approved as Wi-Fi
Certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance must be
interoperable with each other, even if they are from
different manufacturers. Configuring these products
to operate with each other, however, frequently
requires passwords and other often annoying
procedures such as the need to configure
communication parameters. Using NFC technology and
new software being developed by Philips Applied
Technologies, these annoying procedures are
completely eliminated. Simply by holding Wi-Fi
Certified products incorporating the new NFC
solution next to each other, they will be able to
seamlessly connect and start working together
without any need for user interaction.
The new technique has already received approval from
leading members of the Wi-Fi Alliance responsible
for standardization, including Microsoft, Intel,
Cisco and Nokia. Working with several leading
equipment manufacturers, Philips Applied
Technologies has developed a complete Wi-Fi
easy-setup solution based around NXP Semiconductors’
latest NFC chips.
